I'm John Francis, 75 a retired engineer from Ohio. When it comes to retirement Iím a little bit in denial. Iím looking for two main things in my life, sunshine and lucrative financial opportunities. I think I have found both of these in Turkey.

I first discovered Antalya in the Turkish Riviera whilst on holiday in 2009. My wife and I fell in love with the place, it has lovely turquoise waters and incredible mountain scenery really it really impressed us. After the holiday we went home with many great photos and stories but didn't know if we would return or not.

Most of my life I have tried to increase my savings. I tried selling fishing tackle on eBay with limited success. I took a course on stock market trading but never had the time to master that, so then I thought about property. It was in 2010, I was surfing the internet for property investments and hit upon lots of good press about Istanbul. Even today some experts believe thast Istanbul is one of the best places in the world to invest in property because prices are really low. If you buy at the build stage, off-plan properties start at $45,000. In a big city like Istanbul thereís always plenty of demand for apartments, and house prices are generally still going up.

The construction process in Turkey, is very fast and efficient as the building techniques are some of the best in the world. In 2005, Ikea opened its first store in Istanbul, ushering in a new concept of modern affordable living. Together these factors have made property investment easier and more lucrative than ever before.

I decided to organise a property viewing trip to Istanbul to see for myself.

The bustling city of Istanbul is incredible, you feel a real buzz of energy about the place and although it's very busy people donít seem to be aggressive like in some cities. Although I could never live in Istanbul I found great investment opportunities and bought a 2 unit apartment in Innovia, a development in Beylikduzu. This suburb of Istanbul is undergoing major regeneration, and the newly extended metro transport system is now reaching the area and making it an attractive location for city workers. I have been renting successfully since my apartment was completed in September 2010.

Because my apartment is managed by people in Beylikduzu I don't really have to visit Istanbul. My wife and I still prefer beach life in Antalya. Having bought one property in Turkey, and seeing how straightforward it was, we couldn't resist taking a look at property in Antalya.

Now that we have time to travel our new idea is to have a second home. Again, I must say that you get a lot for your money. In Antalya we can buy such lovely, modern places with a swimming pool for $90,000. Our plan is to downsize our home in Akron, and treat ourselves to something special. We are dreaming about a Penthouse in Lara.

So here I am retired and very excited about our new adventures in Turkey. Iím looking forward to getting up early in the morning, walking down to the beach and swimming in those still turquoise waters. It will be good for my health and my heart.

At this time in my life I can't think of anything nicer than having a holiday home abroad and for anyone on a tight budget Antalya is a great destination. Itís also a delightful place, I know that my family and friends will come and visit and share the good times with us.
